“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.” Psalm 19.1-2 NIV
This is the text for Sunday’s sermon. Looking up at a night sky and being astonished by the beauty of the stars — this is like prayer, this act of looking up. Even in troubled times, when everything around us seems dark and dangerous, this act of looking up can be a powerful thing. It’s an important religious practice. In a cathedral, your eyes are immediately drawn upward. The very architecture compels you to raise your eyes. Maybe God made the sky — day and night sky — so beautiful that it does the same thing. The sky is like the top of our natural cathedral.
A song by Bob Bennett speaks of mountain cathedrals and “windows made of sky” which draw our eyes upward.
