‘Everyone seems to be vulnerable’
United Methodist News Service writer Linda Bloom on tornadoes: Tornados were not uncommon in northern Indiana when I was growing up, but none of them ever touched down in my hometown of Fort Wayne. According to Native American legend, or … Continue reading

From the dedication yesterday of the Neighborhood Garden on the corner of Broad and Church Streets. Several religious groups and community organizations signed up for the plots and have recently planted. Long ago this site was a gas station.
Tuscaloosa Tornado
Video taken yesterday. Leaves me speechless. Looks like a giant, devouring tree. The video shows smaller tornadoes spinning sideways off the main one. These huge tornadoes are spinning so fast that some of that spin is shed, spawning sidekicks. That’s … Continue reading

Light In Winter
Officially, winter begins on the solstice, but that is the darkest day of the year. If you care about light, half of the darkest days are already over when winter officially begins. And the phenomenon of each day getting darker … Continue reading
Cleveland From the West
A view of downtown Cleveland from the west, along the shore of Lake Erie. I liked the threefold composition of this picture, showing land, water (or ice) and sky. We had a lovely time in Cleveland over the weekend, visiting … Continue reading

Straits of Mackinac
The Mackinac Bridge links the Lower and Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Before the bridge was completed in 1957, only ferries went across the Straits of Mackinac. The Mackinac Bridge Walk began that first year with 250 participants. It happens now … Continue reading
Red Flower
Yesterday our church staff met at a lovely home for a day of planning. We talked through the calendar for the coming year and discussed events and programs to populate it. Folks kicked off sandals at the door and went … Continue reading

A Path
This picture, from a park in Toledo, suggested to me the opening line from Pilgrim’s Progress: “As I walked through the wilderness of this world…” What does this image suggest to you?

Black, gray, green, yellow, pink, and terra cotta. I like the contrast between circles and lines too.

‘Blue Lightning and Flashes of Green Light’
Tornadoes hit southeastern Michigan early Sunday morning: Cassandra Kraehnke, who lives in Kimberly Estates mobile home park in Frenchtown, said their home was “not the safest place to be” when the tornado warning sirens sounded. She and her husband, brother-in-law, … Continue reading
Planting Begins
Planting began this week in our church’s community garden, God’s Acre. “A sower went out to sow.” (Mk 4.3)
